Dr. Alex McCalla is professor emeritus of agricultural and resource economics at the University of California, Davis (UCD). Born in Alberta, Canada, he received his first two degrees from the University of Alberta and his doctorate in agricultural economics from the University of Minnesota in 1966. Dr. McCalla spent his academic career at UCD, where he taught for 28 years, served as dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and founding dean of the Graduate School of Management. After retirement from UCD he was director of rural development at the World Bank. Dr. McCalla is best known for his research in international trade. He was founding chair of the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium.
